Adam Benjamin encourages informed choice-making, directed by individual interest, and leads us toward greater flexibility in the use of our senses. He teaches us to value the spaces between as well as inside our encounters; exploring the edges of what we know – and dancing on occasion into the unknown. The workshop is respectful of individual needs for space, for rest and for challenge and is open to professional and community dancers.

ABOUT ADAM / BIO:
Adam is an award-winning choreographer, author and one of the pioneers of inclusive dance. He was joint founder and artistic director of CandoCo Dance Company (1990 – 98) and founded Tshwaragano Dance Company, the first South African dance company integrated on both racial and disability lines. More recently he helped establish the first professional integrated company in Japan; Company-Kyo. His seminal text Making an Entrance, first published by Routledge in 2002 was updated in 2022 in its 2nd edition.
Adam has been an Associate Artist at The Place, a Wingate Scholar, a Rayne Choreographic Fellow, recipient of an Arts Council International Artist Fellowship, and was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship in 2013 while on the faculty of Theatre and Performance at Plymouth University. He was amongst the first choreographers to receive the award of Change Maker by the South Bank Centre in 2015. A founder member of the improvisational ensemble Five Men Dancing, he has choreographed for community groups and professional companies around the world. He has taught and performed with amongst others Russell Maliphant, Kirstie Simson, Jordi Cortés, Rick Nodine and Gabriele Reuter. Adam is the director of The Dancer’s Forest initiative aimed at encouraging environmental responsibility within the dance sector.

Kolmipäiväinen inklusiivinen työpaja, jossa liikutaan helpoista ja saavutettavista harjoitteista kompleksisiin, kerroksellisiin improvisaatioihin käyttäen ääntä, liikettä ja pysähtyneisyyttä.

Adam kannustaa tietoiseen valintojen tekoon, jota ohjaa yksilöllinen kiinnostus, ja johdattaa meitä käyttämään aistejamme joustavammin. Hän opettaa meitä arvostamaan tiloja kohtaamisten välissä ja niiden sisällä, tutkien tuntemamme rajoja – ja välillä tanssien tuntemattomaan. Työpajassa kunnioitetaan yksilöllisiä tarpeita tilaan, lepoon ja haasteisiin nähden, ja se on avoin niin tanssin ammattilaisille kuin harrastajille.

ADAM BENJAMININ BIO:
Adam Benjamin on koreografi, kirjailija ja yksi integroidun tanssin edelläkävijöistä. Hänen kirjaansa Making an Entrance. Theory and practice for disabled and non-disabled dancers (Routledge 2002) pidetään alan perusteoksena. Hän on saanut lukuisia palkintoja, mm. London TimeOut performance award, the Sainsbury’s award for education, ja toimiessaan Plymouthin Yliopiston Teatterin ja Esitystaiteen tiedekunnassa hänelle myönnettiin National Teaching Fellowship -palkinto.
Hän on ollut Associate Artist The Placessa, Wingate Scholar, Rayne-koreografistipendiaatti, Arts Council International Artist Fellowshipin vastaanottaja sekä South Bank Center vuonna 2015 nimittämä Muutoksentekijä. Hän perusti Tshwaragano Dance Companyn, ensimmäisen eteläafrikkalaisen tanssiryhmän, joka on inklusiivinen mitä tulee sekä rotuun että vammaisuuteen. Myöhemmin hän on ollut mukana perustamassa Japanin ensimmäistä integroitua ammattilaistanssiryhmää Company-Kyo’ta. Hän oli CandoCo Dance Companyn perustajajäsen ja 5 Men Dancing -ryhmän perustaja. Hänen uusin koreografinen teoksensa Marked Exim Dance -ryhmälle esitettiin Isossa-Britanniassa ja Italiassa ennen pandemiaa. Hän on opettanut ja esiintynyt mm. Russell Maliphantin, Kirstie Simsonin, Jordi Cortésin ja Gabriele Reuterin kanssa. Pandemian aikana hän käynnisti Dancers’ Forest (Tanssijoiden metsä) hankkeen ja kerää nyt varoja Devonin ensimmäiselle metsäalueelle.
