#SHN 2026 WORKSHOP: The Politics of Producing Across Borders (Suomenlinna, Helsinki, May 13)

The Politics of Producing Across Borders workshop, facilitated by Karishma Bhagani is held on Wednesday 13 May 2026 at 18:00–19:30 as part of #StopHatredNow 2026 program.

The workshop can host up to 30 participants, the places are filled in order of registration. The workshop will be held onsite at HIAP’s facilities in Suomenlinna.

This session explores the role of producers through practical insights and a transnational case study of Theatre for One: Nairobi Edition, spanning the UAE, USA, and Kenya. It invites participants to reflect on the ”borders” within their own work and consider collaborative approaches that balance their needs with those of their partners. The workshop is hosted by Karishma Bhagani.

Karishma Bhagani is a producer, dramaturg and theatre-maker from Mombasa, Kenya. Karishma is the program director of the Bridges Fellowship Program, a training program for African producers, supported by Producer Hub, The Georgetown Lab for Global Performance and Politics and the Mellon Foundation. Karishma has served as a Strategic Consultant for the LAM Sisterhood in Kenya, and the Associate Artistic Director for the Tebere Arts Foundation in Uganda, as well as the Associate Producing Director of the Nairobi Musical Theatre Initiative. She was also a fellow at the Georgetown Lab for Global Performance and Politics (2019-2022). She served as a consultant for the Leeds 2023 Year of Culture Festival. Select production credits: Shakespeare in the Park: Twelfth Night (NYC), Goddess: The Musical (Berkeley Rep and The Public Theater), produced The Manic Monologues: Africa Edition as well as Theatre for One: Nairobi Edition in conjunction with the Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi and Octopus Theatricals in New York. She is a PhD candidate in Theater and Performance Studies at Stanford University, a Knight Hennessy Scholar and a RAISE fellow. She graduated from New York University (NYU) with a B.F.A in Theatre and a B.A. in History.
