Sukella modernin tanssin juurille!

Graham technique workshop 12-13 October 2026

Dive into the roots of modern dance!

Requested by our members, this Graham technique workshop offers dance professionals and students a unique opportunity to delve into the heart of one of the most significant techniques in dance history.

Whether you are revisiting a familiar technique or interested in exploring dance’s historical legacy, you are warmly welcome to join us. No prior experience with Graham technique is required—simply bring your curiosity and a willingness to dive in!

Graham Technique workshop

This two-day workshop introduces participants to the movement vocabulary and key principles of Martha Graham’s dance technique. The classes follow a traditional Graham technique progression, moving from floor work to standing exercises in the centre and travelling sequences across the space. The work explores, among other elements, the role of contraction and release, spirals, breath and gravity within the Graham technique.

Mervi is particularly drawn to the strong sense of rhythm and musicality in Graham technique, as well as its clear movement intention and powerful expressivity. Opposition is another essential element of the technique: the body works simultaneously in opposing directions, creating a strong sense of tension within the body and movement. It is this tension, and the dramatic quality of movement that emerges from it, that has continued to fascinate Mervi about Graham technique.

Mervi Siipilähde holds a Master of Arts in Dance with a focus on dance pedagogy. She was first introduced to Graham technique as part of her BA studies in dance at Trinity Laban in London. She later deepened her practice during her MA studies in dance pedagogy at the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki, including further studies at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance in New York. Mervi has worked as a dance teacher, performer and choreographer. She currently works full-time in the IT field.
