The cERAda Research Network in Arts Education warmly invites you to a Studia Generalia lecture Socially Engaged Art as a Subject of Study
Lecturer: Kai Lehikoinen, University Researcher, Uniarts Helsinki’s Research Institute
Wednesday 6 May, 16:00–17:00
University of the Arts Helsinki, Mylly building, room K‑209, Sörnäisten rantatie 19, Helsinki.
Drawing on what Claire Bishop (2007) has termed “the social turn in contemporary art,” this lecture explores socially engaged art as a distinct field of artistic practice, research, and education, and examines its role and significance in higher arts education. The lecture is based on Lehikoinen’s book Creativity, Society, and the Role of Socially Engaged Art in Higher Arts Education (Routledge, 2025), which conceptualises socially engaged art as an independent field of artistic, pedagogical, and scholarly inquiry.
The Studia Generalia lecture is open to students, researchers, artists, artist pedagogues, arts educators, art critics, and anyone interested in the arts, participation, co‑creation, and processes of social transformation.
