A performance representing the new wave of contemporary Sámi dance explores the sense of community and kinship between people, nature, and the earth.
Elle Sofe Company, based in the Norwegian part of Sápmi, presents the work Vástádus eana / The Answer is Land, which explores community and kinship between people, the surrounding nature, and the Earth itself. The choreography draws inspiration from demonstrations, Sámi spiritual traditions, and formation dance.
The piece is created for seven female performers from diverse backgrounds, who bring their own stories, bodies, and voices to the stage. Composer and yoik professor Frode Fjellheim has composed a multi-layered yoik that serves as the driving force of the performance. Fjellheim highlights the versatility of yoik and introduces a new approach to this traditional musical form.
