Circo Aereo & Eetu Ranta Pyörre

Pyörre is a solo performance by circus artist Eetu Ranta for audiences aged 5 and up. The piece brings together different circus disciplines and their encounters, forming a whole in which movements, moods and images intertwine.

In Pyörre, the spinning, hypnotic motion created through acrobatics and juggling draws in not only objects and materials, but also sound and light. The performance brings together different circus disciplines and their encounters – a collection of movements, moods and images.

For the performance, toys and tools used in different cultures around the world have been gathered. Manipulating them requires skill and an understanding of how the laws of physics affect movement. Originally made from natural materials, objects such as a Nigerian rascal top made from a seashell, a Mexican lasso, and a Chinese diabolo are given new treatment and life in the performance.

When handled with skill, the sounds produced by the spinning, hypnotic motion of the objects evoke images of natural phenomena such as wind or storms, which seem to influence the performer’s movements and choreography.

Eetu Ranta is an exceptionally versatile contemporary circus artist of the new generation. In Finland he has worked with companies and institutions including Circo Aereo, Race Horse Company, Dance Theatre Hurjaruuth, and the Finnish National Opera.
