Merry Christmas, Sanni and Samuli! returns to the stage for four performances. The shows will take place in December 2026 at Cable Factory, on the stage of Dance Theatre Hurjaruuth.
Merry Christmas, Sanni and Samuli! explores Christmas as a personal and cultural ritual – its warmth, pressures, aesthetics, traditions, obsessions and memories. The work is a physical, honest and carnivalesque journey into both the light and the dark side of Christmas.
On stage, virtuoso performers bring to life, with fierce energy, a host of instantly recognizable yet absurd Christmas characters: elves, the family idyll, bored Swedish-speaking Finns dressed in their Christmas pyjamas, the Christmas tree, Santa Claus, the Christmas angel, moralizing twins in Christmas sweaters – and, of course, the spirits of Christmas, Sanni and Samuli.
Created for adults, the approximately two-hour performance moves along the boundaries between entertainment, awkwardness and disturbance. The show challenges the audience to recognize their own reactions: why does something make us laugh, why does something feel like too much – and why are we not always able to say what is “okay”?
