Marja Rautakorpi & Adelante Criaturas

This next-generation contemporary flamenco work explores the human as a creature within the world's ever-accelerating rhythm. Playfully and ironically, it unsettles the traditional vocabulary of flamenco, delving into its creaturely dimensions.

Criaturas is a contemporary flamenco work created by Marja Rautakorpi and Adelante, a flamenco ensemble of young dancers. The piece explores the human being as a creature within the accelerating pulse of the world. It asks why we have begun to separate individuals from one another at a time when we need each other more than ever. The work challenges the traditional language and forms of flamenco, playfully and ironically immersing itself in its creaturely, animal-like dimensions.

Adelante is a new-generation flamenco ensemble founded by Marja Rautakorpi, responding to a long-recognized need within the flamenco field. The group consists of nine advanced flamenco dancers aged 15–35 from different backgrounds.

Both the ensemble and the performance emerged from a year-long pilot project led by Rautakorpi. The project’s aim was to create a stage work collaboratively with young people, drawing on themes that are meaningful to them. It grew out of a desire to build a future for flamenco by bringing together young dancers, offering them opportunities for focused artistic development, and supporting their individual growth as emerging artists.
