Johanna Nuutinen +Collaborators Élixir de Mer

The work explores the physical resonance of scents in dance, sound, and space. It awakens sensory experiences embedded in the layers of our bodies, opening up journeys through time. It is the fourth part of Nuutinen’s Senses series.

Élixir de Mer delves into the sense of smell from a corporeal perspective.

In a world dominated by visual stimuli, scent has a stealthy and elusive presence. Scent memories leave strong imprints within the layers of our bodies—whether it’s the gentle aroma of violet petals or the pungent swell of a gas station forecourt. A scent can transport us through time to a specific place, situation, or atmosphere. It can also be a form of seduction and power, as perfumes were used in both Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt.

With every breath, molecules from our surroundings are absorbed into our mucous membranes. Perhaps it was the stimulating effect of scent that led the olfactory buds of a creature floating in the primordial sea to evolve into brain cells?

The physicality of smell sets our bodies vibrating, and Élixir de Mer explores this resonance through dance, sound, and space. It seeks out the multilayered harmonies of scent—sensations that can remain with us for weeks, months, even years.

Élixir de Mer is the fourth work of the series exploring senses and our sensory experiences by choreographer Johanna Nuutinen.

An audience discussion will be held after the evening performances on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Between Saturday’s performances, a lecture related to the themes of scent will be organized. For more information, see the event page on the Dance House Helsinki website.

A few carefully selected scents are used in the performance. Please arrive fragrance-free.
