Free Lancelot is a series of lightly prepared performances in which multidisciplinary freelance dance artist Pie Kär asks what their profession is. The series is an exploration of performance formats, in which Kär combines elements typical of concerts, talk shows, storytelling, and contemporary dance pieces.
Pie Kär and Zipora Ogola: Free Lancelot Soirée
A troubadour wading among
rectal beats, rectal beats,
the patron saint of free lances
biting in the diaphragm.
– Pie Kär 2024– – whatever Venus commands
is a sweet duty,
she never dwells
in a lazy heart.
– Carmina Burana, 13th century, original language Latin, translator unknown
Free Lancelot is dedicated to freelance artists, and everyone else, whether employed or unemployed, is warmly welcome.
In the performance the questions about modern-day work are set against a medieval backdrop. The origins of the term “freelancer” lead to medieval chivalry romance, blending historical narrative with fiction. The term “free lance” dates back to 1819, when Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832 Scotland) used it to describe mercenaries in his chivalric novel Ivanhoe. Over the course of two centuries, originating in the modern era and set in the fictionalized Middle Ages, the term has taken on its current meaning and form, “freelancer”.
This evening performance, a soirée, is the third installment in the Free Lancelot series, as well as the first collaboration between Kär and kantele musician Zipora Ogola. The performance features improvised, composed, and borrowed musical segments. The borrowed compositions and texts will be announced and credited at a later date. The soirée is created during a residency at the Contemporary Art Space Kutomo in the fall of 2026. Dramaturg Tarleena Laakko is visiting the residency as an outside observer. Previous installments of the series were realized with dance artists Jussi Ulkuniemi and Nadja Leham in 2024 and 2025.
