Janna Haavisto, Grus Grus Theater Varissuo – Ysärin teinisafari

Varissuo – 90s Teen Safari (Varissuo – Ysärin teinisafari) is an autofictional solo performance by Grus Grus Theatre. It draws inspiration from the personal history of Turku local Janna Haavisto, the 1990s, and Turku’s both infamous and celebrated suburb of Varissuo.

Serving as the tour guide is the contemporary clown character Taika-Ansa Idé. An expert in all fields, T.A. Idé leads the audience in the footsteps of the mythical artist Janna Haavisto on an expedition into a personal yet universal 90s youth, where people danced at soft drink discos (limudisko) and hid their fear behind cool poses.

The performance explores the pain points of teenage life while celebrating the joy and courage of growing into womanhood. As the first contemporary clowning show set in Varissuo, it uses art to strengthen the suburb’s appeal and community pride. Varissuo is not merely a stage for survival, but also a place where an open-minded artist can emerge.

Varissuo – 90s Teen Safari is aimed at adult audiences, and especially anyone who spent their youth in the 1990s. The show is also ideal for local Varissuo residents and anyone looking to experience the suburb without prejudice.

About the Artist
Janna Haavisto is an international artist hailing from Varissuo, Turku, who specializes in physical theatre, clowning, and character work. Haavisto was the first Finn to earn a Master’s degree in Clown Studies from the Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts (Teaterhögskolan i Stockholm) and has since continued her studies around the globe. She is a versatile physical performer and a long-standing member of Grus Grus Theatre.

Taika-Ansa Idé is a beloved contemporary clown character created by Haavisto, previously featured at venues such as the Wäinö Aaltonen Museum, Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova, and the Turku Medieval Market.

Concept
The show is part of Grus Grus Theatre’s “Last-Minute Deals” (Äkkilähdöt Lähelle / Sista Minuten) concept, which takes the form of a performance journey to a nearby location. In these productions, familiar surroundings are explored with curiosity and from entirely new perspectives.
