The festival and touring season of summer ’24 is well underway and there are again plenty of opportunities to see Finnish circus and dance shows around Europe.
If you’re yearning to see Opus Company & Hands some Feet’s show Colorsphere, which was pitched at Performing HEL last year, you can check it out at Harstad Kulturhus in Norway 27 June or at Malmö Festivalen in Sweden 9–10 August. Hands some Feet will also bring their eponymous show to Malmö on the 11th of August, so why not see both!
Circus artist Marianne Vaalimaa tours Sweden during June with her groovy, one-woman street circus show Circus for FunK! Lots of stops around the country, so for more information, see Marianne’s website.
Also in Sweden, Norrdans’s Stuff in the Park project continues in June and July. One of the four Nordic choreographers taking part in the project is Finnish Janina Rajakangas with her work A Procession. For locations and dates see Norrdans’s website.
In Stockholm, Recover Laboratory joins forces with Svalbard Company in creating a multidisciplinary, site-specific One Night Only event. The performance will take place on the 23rd of August near the city centre, on a floating platform surrounded by water. Details forthcoming, so follow Recover Laboratory’s website.
Earlier in August, Finnish all-female circus company Sisus will premiere their latest piece Dissimilis in Kulturhuset’s Parkteatern in Stockholm 13–14 August. In September they’ll be attending the At.tension festival in Lärz, Germany with their performance Memoirs of Mud.
Regarding Central Europe, at Festival Theaterformen in Braunschweig, Germany there’s still an opportunity to see Pauliina Feodoroff’s Matriarchy 19–20 June. And in neighbouring Czech Republic, the acrobatics duo Ira & Jere will perform at the Letopruhy Festival in Volyně on the 6th of July with their show Pirie Poke, which is directed by Ilmatila’s Ilona Jäntti.
Sirkus Aikamoinen & Circus I Love You are once again touring this summer with their tent show I love you two. In June and July, the show can be seen in France in Villeparisis, Brioux-sur-Boutonne and Avignon, after which they’ll head to Lienz in Austria and finally Spa and Aalst in Belgium in August. Check out their website for more information.
In Italy, Tero Saarinen Company will be attending the Civitanova Danza festival, where on July 4th Tero Saarinen will premiere Room 7, a new solo piece made especially for Saarinen by choreographer Carolyn Carlson. The double bill evening opens with Saarinen’s own classic work Westward Ho!
Heading to Edinburgh Fringe? Then be sure not to miss Kallo Collective’s Only Bones v1.9 by Matt Pasquet at ZOO Playground, 2–10 August. Or if you prefer another version, Only Bones v1.6 by Marina Cherry can be seen at Tallinn Fringe in Estonia, 22–24 August. For more Finnish flavour at Tallinn Fringe, you can also see Aura Company’s circus show Boxing on the 22nd of August.
And while we’re in Estonia, WAUHAUS are performing their new piece The Companion – which premiered at Oslo this March – at the Baltoscandal Festival in Rakvere 4–7 July, and later in August at internationale tanzmesse nrw in Düsseldorf, Germany.
