International world stars will come together with artists of a new generation at Helsinki Flamenco Bienal in April.
Compañía Kaari & Roni Martin is launching a new international arts festival in Helsinki with a programme mixing contemporary flamenco, living legends and young artists.
The first festival, to be held at the Dance House Helsinki from 22 to 26 April 2025, will show what flamenco is in this era and how its different genres intertwine tradition and different trends in contemporary art.
“The first Helsinki Flamenco Bienal takes a look through flamenco’s diverse history to the present day: how an art form born from the fusion of different Andalusian cultures and fortified by the avant-garde mindset of the 1930’s has survived dictatorship, persecution and the stranglehold of capitalism as a distinctive, raw and ever-changing art form”, says artistic director Kaari Martin.
The programme features among others avant-garde flamenco challenger and dancer-choreographer Israel Galván, living flamenco legend, singer Carmen Linares, award-winning Rafaela Carrasco and flamenco piano master Pablo Suárez. The screaming men’s choir Huutajat meets Israel Galván in the miniature Screaming Duende. Compañía Kaari & Roni Martin’s crude and cruel KILL Carmen returns to the stage with it’s Tarantino-esque intensity ten years after its premiere.
The festival will also feature classes by Israel Galván and Mariana Collado, among others, for flamenco enthusiasts and professionals.
